Blog Post 3

This week I learned about project based learning.  In this respect, Popplet proved itself to be a useful tool for organizing lessons plans and expounding ideas for students. It is an efficient means for structuring a project in a comprehensive manner, that is both easy on the eyes and easy to understand. This format will hopefully be useful for my future teaching tasks.
Along with my progress with Popplet, my genius hour project seems to be coming along at a steady pace. I still have some work to do on sorting out the primary content. That is the real root of the project, identifying philosophical foundations in fictional literature. While this will take some research, I am confident in my ability to get this part of the project done without too much difficulty. Time management will be my greatest issue in this respect. With that said, I have sorted out a list of thirty fictional books I have read which I will use in the project. They all have potential for significant philosophical connections and, perhaps most importantly, they offer the opportunity for diverse philosophical comparisons in terms of philosophical subject matter and subsequent disciplines. This last point is crucial, as it would be pretty boring to apply the same or similar philosophical theories or subject matter to the same books over and over again. Hence, diversity in this regard will be central to increasing the informative power and creative exploration of my genius hour project in general. My goal for this week is to complete fifteen philosophical connections with the fictional texts I have selected and to prepare a script for my Ted Talk next week.

Blog Post 2

Today I learned that quite a bit more thoughtful organization will have to go into planning the presentation of my genius hour blog. In particular, I will will need to be detailed when it comes to explaining philosophical concepts, however, I do not want to be too wordy, as that will run the risk of making the project inaccessible to some and potentially boring. Another issue that will require some addressing and trail and error is incorporating interactive media into my project if possible. Improving my skills and knowledge in this area is definitely a goal, and will hopefully become a positive side effect in the production of my product. Learning how to incorporate my slide show into my blog today was definitely a step in the right direction in this respect. Attending class has been very useful in overcoming some of the trouble shooting problems I have encountered when working on this project. My goal before next class is to have all my fictional works selected and have most of the associated philosophical ideas and concepts organized and ready.

Copy Right Law in Canada

I learned a few interesting things about copy right law in Canada.  Perhaps one of the most important things I learned was the distinction between "fair use" (American Law) and "fair dealings" (Canadian Law). Fair dealings is explained to be the use of copy righted material for the purpose of study, research, criticism and review, under Canadian Law. While fair dealing is very similar to fair use, fair use includes using material for education purposes, where as fair dealing does not. Perhaps the most important thing to teach my future students regarding copy right law in Canada would be to alert them to the Creative Commons. The Creative Commons is a good interactive way to get engaged in learning about copy right law through actually partaking in its operations. For example, student signing up for the Creative Commons have to apply for a copy right licence and are able to view and use material according to the the four types of copy rights established by the Creative Commons forum.

Welcome Post

Hi and welcome to my Genius Hour Blog!

I'm Corey Padgett and some of my main interests are in philosophy and literature. So my genius hour project is going to be an attempt to combine the two subjects into an interesting and useful reference that can hopefully be useful in the future and keep on being accumulated and improved upon over time. The major idea here is I will attempt to cross reference important philosophical ideas with their fictional counter parts in literature. This will hopefully help improve people's interests in both subjects while providing a useful framework for any one that has a more particular interest in a philosophical subject. Hope that all makes good sense! Thank and enjoy!
